The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) is delighted to invite all Members to the Annual General Meeting which will take place in Milan, Italy on Thursday, 23 May 2013 from 2:00 to 7:00 pm. We also invite all interested stakeholders to attend our Standards Update and Panel Discussion on Responsibility and Assurance in the Jewellery & Watch Industry from 2:30pm.
Events on the day will include:
2:00pm – 2:30pm - RJC Annual General Meeting – For RJC Members
2:30pm – 3:30pm – RJC Standards Update – Open to the Public
The RJC Standards Update will include the following speakers:
- Dr. Fiona Solomon, RJC Director, Standards Development will highlight progress in the RJC Standards program over the last 12 months, including the Code of Practices review and work on responsible sourcing.
- Effie Marinos, Sustainability Manager at SGS will give an auditor perspective on the value of third party assurance for businesses.
- Dr. Gaetano Cavalieri, President, CIBJO will provide an overview of the value of CSR education to the jewellery industry, and the synergies between CIBJO and RJC.
4:00pm – 6:00pm – Panel Discussion– Responsibility and Assurance in the Jewellery & Watch Industry – Open to the Public
The Panel Discussion will see Industry Leaders convene to discuss responsible business practices and the importance of the RJC Certification system. The speakers include representatives from UniCredit Bank, Italian Ministry of Economic Development, The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), Confindustria Federorafi , Club degli Orafi,Bulgari Spa, Legor Group, WWF Italy and Progold S.p.A.

The Responsible Jewellery Council and LBMA organised a session at Baselworld – “Responsible gold sourcing: industry efforts that support gold supply chain due diligence and Chain-of-Custody”

March 2013 – Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC)
Solidaridad and the Responsible Jewellery Council held a joint presentation at PDAC “The Growing Market Demand for Responsibly- Produced, Conflict-Free Metals: What Mining Companies Need to Know”.
This session, led by representatives of responsible sourcing initiatives, industry members, governments and civil society organizations, featured a discussion about the laws, voluntary standards and pilot projects that are influencing metals buyers, and how the changes can impact mining companies, regardless of where they operate.

February 2013 – RJC COP Review Workshops – India
The RJC is reviewing its Code of Practices, the certification standard applicable to all RJC Members in the jewellery supply chain from mine to retail. Consultation workshops were held to discuss the proposed revisions and provide feedback. These workshops took place in Mumbai & Surat in February 2013.

4th February 2013 – Regulatory Initiatives Concerning Natural Resources: Lessons for Supply Chain Management in Africa
Marieke Van der Mijn, RJC Standards Coordinator, participated in this Chatham House event which is being held as part of the De Beers Diamond Dialogue Series.

23 August 2012 – India International Jewellery Show (IIJS), Mumbai
On the 23 August 2012 Michael Rae, RJC CEO, partipated in the Seminar Spectrum at IIJS. Michael presented on the RJC’s Chain-of-Custody Standard for Precious Metals. This was part of the Seminar on the US Jewellery Market and the expectation of the US Consumers from Indian Suppliers.

22 August 2012 – RJC & SAI Training Session, Mumbai

The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) and Social Accountability International (SAI) held a one-day supplier training program in India to coincide with the India International Jewellery Show. The training focused on using management systems to improve labour standards and working conditions.

June 2012 – JCK, Las Vegas
On the 1st June 2012 Dorothée Gizenga, Executive Director of the Diamond Development Initiative International (DDII) addressed at JCK on the theme “Your Business and Artisanal Diamond Mining: What You and Your Customers Should Know”. Michael Rae, RJC’s CEO, was invited to intervene on RJC’s initiative in recognition of Dr Runci’s outstanding leadership in the formation, development and current success of the RJC. In fact, at its Annual General Meeting in Paris in May 2012, RJC invited its Members to donate funds to the DDI International.
“All RJC Members are encouraged to help further the important work of DDI International in recognition of Matt’s pivotal contribution to the jewellery industry. RJC is very grateful to those Members who will decide to support that honourable cause,” said Michael Rae.

June 2012 - JCK, Las Vegas
On 2nd June 2012 RJC held an Industry Briefing at JCK on the theme “Do you know where your gold comes from? Chain of Custody: providing support for supply chain due diligence”.
The briefing was introduced by Dave Bonaparte, Senior Vice President of JCK and the Moderator was Yedwa Simelane, Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs, AngloGold Ashanti Limited. May 2012 - ISEAL Alliance Conference, Bonn
RJC has been accepted as a Full Member of the ISEAL Alliance at their Board meeting in Bonn, Germany on May 29, 2012.

Fiona Solomon, RJC Director of Standards Development was a panel speaker during the public day of the conference. The topic of the panel was: Driving the Uptake of Standards – The Role of Governments. The plenary session explored some of the ways in which this trend is being rolled out across a range of countries and economic sectors and what impact it is having on the standards movement. RJC discussed its participation in the multi-stakeholder development of the OECD Due Diligence Guidance and how the CoC Standards have sought to support implementation.
